about

In 1996 the American flutist Robert Dick, the German pianist Uli Johannes Kieckbusch and the Swiss cellist Alfred Zimmerlin founded the trio DKZ (Dick / Kieckbusch / Zimmerlin). After five years of hosting successful concerts, the three of them were invited to the Swiss radio station, Radio SRF 2 Kultur, to make a recording. This recording was first published in 2016 at Unit Records. In 2017, the trio held a memorable concert in Karlsruhe (Germany), which is what is presented here.

The trio Dick/ Kieckbusch/ Zimmerlin is known for their fine art of improvisation. Even without making any agreements before their performances, the three of them perform in such a way that surely no-one would suspect that it is all improvised. One can tell by excellent grasp of musical structures and harmonies, that all three of them are composers as well, who without using words share a mutual understanding of each other.
